The American Studies Workshop Series is BACK! Join us Friday, October 16, for “Trading Land Like Stocks: The Work of Investor Real Estate in the 1970s and 1980s,” with Dr. Alex Beasley, Assistant Professor of American Studies. Dr. Sage Ponder, Stiles Professor in American Studies, will be joining as first respondent. Beasley teaches courses in the history of capitalism, the history of energy, urban history, and U.S. empire. He is the author of Expert Capital: Houston and the Making of a Service Empire, forthcoming from Harvard University Press. He co-edited, with Jessica Levy, a volume entitled Capitalism and the American Century: Towards a Global History of Postwar America (The University of Pennsylvania Press, December 2026). His next project is an economic and cultural history of the global financialization of U.S. real estate after the 1960s. Friday, October 16 11:30 AM–1:00 PM BUR 436A Scholars across campus are invited to RSVP here! Those who RSVP will receive a pre-circulated copy of the manuscript in advance of the workshop. We encourage participants to read the manuscript ahead of time and come prepared to share feedback and comments directly with the author during the workshop. And stick around afterward for a graduate professionalization workshop! From 1:00–2:00 PM, join us for “Hidden Curriculum: Navigating the Master’s Report,” also in BUR 436A.
